What is a Checkerboard Platter?
For me, a summer checkerboard platter is one of the most fun and beautiful ways to serve fresh seasonal ingredients. I love how the simple idea of a checkerboard layout turns ordinary foods into something really eye-catching and creative.
For a checkerboard platter: arrange the ingredients in a colorful grid that’s just as fun to make as it is to eat. It’s the perfect thing to bring to a picnic or serve on a sunny afternoon, and it always gets people talking.

Ingredients for this 4th of July Checkerboard Platter
Both the boards are made with the same ingredients and are just assembled a little differently. All you need for these boards are:
- Watermelon (cubed)
- Feta (cubed)
- Blueberries
Optional: mint for garnish
The assemble this board cut the watermelon and feta into cubes.
For the first board, you can assemble the board by alternating rows of feta and watermelon and watermelon and blueberries.
For the second board, alternate watermelon and feta and then add blueberries to the top in a pattern.
Both boards should be served with a fork or toothpicks and you can use either a square or rectangle board.

Tips for Serving this 4th of July Checkerboard Platter
My Favorite Tips for Serving a Summer Checkerboard Platter
Keep it Chilled
Since this board is full of fresh summer ingredients like cheese and melon, I always prep it ahead and keep it in the fridge until we’re ready to eat. If we’re outside, I’ll set the platter on a tray of ice to help it stay cool and fresh longer.
Offer Toothpicks or Mini Forks
To keep the checkerboard pattern intact, I like to put out toothpicks or tiny forks so everyone can easily grab what they want without making a mess of the board.
Add Small Plates
I’ve found that guests love building their own little plates, especially with combos like watermelon and feta or tomatoes with mozzarella and basil. A few small appetizer plates make it easy and tidy.
Suggest Tasty Pairings
Sometimes I’ll point out a few of my favorite pairings—like cantaloupe and blueberries or cucumber with feta—so people can try fun flavor combinations they might not think of.
Garnish Last-Minute
I wait until just before serving to add basil or any drizzle (like a balsamic glaze). It keeps the herbs fresh and makes everything pop visually.
Use the Right Board
A flat, rimless board works best to keep the checkerboard pattern clean and crisp. Sloped edges or deep platters can make things slide around too much.
Play with Color
I love placing bold, contrasting colors next to each other—like red tomatoes beside white mozzarella, or bright orange cantaloupe next to green cucumber. It really brings the whole board to life.
Have Extras Ready
If it’s a longer event, I’ll keep a few extra ingredients nearby so I can quickly refill any sections that get devoured early!
And for a bonus – here’s one more idea
