The Formula: 1 Store, 10 Minutes, 5 Ingredients, 1 Board

That’s really all it takes. The secret to a great weeknight charcuterie board is keeping it simple. You don’t need 20 ingredients, a massive wooden board, or hours in the kitchen. You just need a little variety: something salty, something creamy, something crunchy, something sweet, and something fresh. That’s your formula every single time.

The 5-Ingredient Weeknight Formula

No matter what store you’re shopping at or what your budget is, this framework works every time:

1. A Meat — Salami, pepperoni, or prosciutto. Pre-sliced packages work perfectly and are usually under $5.

2. A Cheese — Pick one or two. A block of cheddar, a wedge of gouda, or a small round of brie are all easy, affordable options. Cubing or slicing ahead of time is all the prep you need.

3. A Cracker or Bread — This is your base. Any cracker you have in the pantry works. Crackers, pita chips, sliced baguette — all great choices.

4. Something Fresh — Grapes, strawberries, apple slices, or cherry tomatoes. Whatever looks good and is already in your fridge or easy to grab at the store.

5. Something Sweet or Briny — A small handful of nuts, a few olives, a spoonful of jam, or some honey. This is what takes your board from snack plate to something that feels a little special.

That’s it. Five things. One board. Done.

Budget Tips: Where to Shop

You don’t need to go to a specialty grocery store to make a great charcuterie board. Here are the best places to shop when you’re keeping it fast and affordable:

Trader Joe’s is hands-down one of the best spots for charcuterie on a budget. Their cheese selection is incredible for the price, the pre-sliced meats are convenient, and they carry great crackers, jams, and nuts all in one place. Check out our full Trader Joe’s Charcuterie Board guide for exactly what to grab.

ALDI is another fantastic option — especially for cheese. You can often build an entire board for under $20 at ALDI without sacrificing quality.

Your regular grocery store works just fine too. Stick to the deli section for meats and cheeses, grab crackers from the snack aisle, and pick up fruit from the produce section. No special trip required.

Step-by-Step: How to Assemble Your Weeknight Board in 10 Minutes

Step 1 — Grab your board (2 minutes). Any flat surface works — a wooden cutting board, a large plate, or even a piece of parchment paper on your counter. No special equipment needed.

Step 2 — Place your cheese first (1 minute). Set your cheese down first since it’s usually the largest item. If you have two cheeses, place them on opposite sides of the board so they anchor each end.

Step 3 — Add your meat (2 minutes). Fold or fan your salami next to the cheese. If you want to get fancy, fold slices in half twice to make a quick ruffle — no rolling required.

Step 4 — Fill in with crackers and fresh ingredients (3 minutes). Tuck your crackers in around the cheese and meat, then add your fruit in clusters. Try to break up similar colors so the board looks varied and full.

Step 5 — Add your finishing touch (2 minutes). Spoon a little jam into a small bowl, scatter some nuts, or add a drizzle of honey. Fill any empty gaps with whatever you have — even just a few extra grapes or some fresh herbs from your fridge.

That’s it — your board is ready to serve!
