What is a Butter Board?

Hold the phone – if you’ve never heard of a butter board, you are in for a treat. I had never heard of a butter board until recently, but I am totally hooked.

A ‘butter board’ or a ‘butter charcuterie board’ is a board with butter spread across it and some type of topping to add some fun and flavor. Butter boards are served with bread and people can either dip their bread in the butter or use a knife to spread the butter on their bread.

Butter boards are becoming popular as an appetizer or as a side dish and it is a fun and delicious way to serve up butter.

Ingredients for a Walnut and Maple Butter Board

For this walnut and maple sweet butter board, you need just a few ingredients. Because this board is based on simple and delicious ingredients, it’s best to use the highest quality ingredients for this board. In addition to bread, here are the ingredients I used for this butter board:

  • Butter (I used 1 stick of butter for this board) You can use store bought butter or you can make your own butter – this istruly so easy and makes absolutely delicious butter. You can find a very easy recipe to make your own butter on the Backyard Farming Connection.
  • Maple Syrup – use the best syrup you can find and don’t event hink of replacing it with fake maple (spoken as a New Englander)
  • Chopped Walnuts – finely or rough chapped walnuts – you can also substitute other nuts but I love this butter board with walnuts!
  • Craisins – some type of dried fruit is a great addition to this board or you can use cocunut for a more tropical feel.
  • Salt – butter is always better with a little salt and this board tastes even better with some rough salt on top.

How to Assemble a Maple Butter Board

Assembling your sweet butter board only takes a few minutes. If you are making this board in advance you can leave it out for a few hours or you can make the board ahead and put it in the fridge – just make sure to give you a bit of time to warm up before you serve it.

To assemble this board, start by softening the butter.

Choose a small to medium charcuterie board and smear the butter onto the board. You can also use parchment paper to put the butter on the board. I lke to use a spoon to spread the butter as it adds a nice texture to the board.

After you have the butter spread over the part of the board you want, spread some maple syrup over the board. You can either mix in the maple syrup or spread it on top.

Sprinkle the walnuts and dried fruit of top of the butter and season with salt before serving.

Serving a Sweet Butter Board

This butter board is delicious and can be served as either an appetizer or a side dish with bread.

If you have a large or public group, make sure to serve your board with a knife so people can spread the butter directly on the bread.

Below are a few tisp on serving a butter board:

  1. Room Temperature Butter: Ensure all the butter varieties are served at room temperature to make them easily spreadable. Take them out of the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving to allow them to soften.
  2. Artisanal Breads and Crackers: Pair the butter board with an array of artisanal bread, such as baguette slices, sourdough, or whole-grain loaves. Additionally, provide a selection of crackers or breadsticks for added variety.
  3. Presentation: Arrange the butter board attractively on a wooden board or serving platter, placing each butter variety in small bowls or ramekins. Add decorative touches such as fresh herbs or edible flowers for visual appeal.
  4. Labeling: Label each butter variety to help guests identify the flavors and ingredients. This can be done with small chalkboard signs or printable labels placed next to each butter.
  5. Serving Utensils: Provide individual butter knives or spreaders for each butter variety to prevent cross-contamination of flavors. Alternatively, guests can use their own knives to spread the butter onto bread or crackers.
  6. Consider Dietary Restrictions: Be mindful of any dietary restrictions or preferences among your guests, and offer alternative options such as vegan or lactose-free butter for those with dietary restrictions.
