Butter Board with Jam and Popovers

What is a Butter Board?

A butter board is a trendy culinary creation where softened, high-quality butter is artfully spread on a wooden board and garnished with various toppings such as herbs, edible flowers, sea salt, nuts, and honey. Butter boards are best served for a group of people and it’s typically served with an assortment of bread or crackers for dipping.

Butter boards are a fun way to serve up bread with dinner or a perfect appetizer. You can also create ‘butter boards’ with other spreads like cream cheese, chocolate, or other spreadable.

Ingredients for a Butter Board with Jam

The best thing about this board is that you only need a few ingredients (and a few minutes) to assemble it. It’s best to choose the highest quality butter and jam to create this board. I chose to serve this board with fresh popovers, but you can also serve it with bread, scones, or other baked goods.

Here is all you need to make this butter board with jam:

  • Butter (softened)
  • Jam – you can select any type of jam. My favorites for a butter board are raspberry or fig
  • Baked goods
  • Edible Flowers – optional

Assembling a Jam Butter Board

Start by softening your butter. For this board I used just 1/2 stick, but you can easily adjust this based on the number of people.

Spread your softened butter over the board. I prefer to spread part of the board and leave the rest for the baked goods, but you can also cover the entire board and serve the baked goods in a basket alongside your board.

Once your butter is spread, spoon the jam on top of the butter and spread it with a spoon or a knife. You can add a few edible flower for decoration or simply serve it up with fresh baked goods.

  • Use High-Quality Butter: Choose rich, creamy, and preferably unsalted butter to allow your toppings to shine.
  • Soften Butter Properly: Ensure the butter is soft enough to spread smoothly but not too melted.
  • Select a Suitable Board: Use a clean, flat wooden or marble board that provides a sturdy surface for spreading.
  • Add a Variety of Toppings: Incorporate a mix of textures and flavors such as herbs, edible flowers, sea salt, nuts, honey, jams, or even thinly sliced radishes.
  • Keep It Seasonal: Use seasonal ingredients for fresh and vibrant flavors.

  • Provide an Assortment of Dippers: Offer a variety of breads, crackers, and perhaps even sliced vegetables to complement the butter.
  • Serve at the Right Temperature: Ensure the butter board is slightly chilled but not too cold, so the butter remains spreadable.
  • Include Spreading Utensils: Provide small knives or spreaders for easy serving.
  • Pair with Beverages: Offer drinks that complement the flavors on the board, such as wine, sparkling water, or a selection of teas.
